Since the impact of the Russian drone, no radiation leaks have been detected

Efforts to extinguish the protective arch at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant are ongoing following the strike by a "Shahed".

This was reported on Friday, February 28, by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Svitlana Hrynchuk.

“In fact, we have not yet completed the extinguishing operations. We are continuing. This does not mean that there is a continuous fire, but we are consistently conducting monitoring of the situation together with our colleagues from the State Emergency Service, specifically over the external cladding of the new safe confinement arch, as we have found smoldering spots on the northern side of the arch in recent days,” she stated during a live broadcast of the unified telethon.

As Hrynchuk explained, each time such spots are detected, it is necessary to remove the upper cladding, extinguish the smoldering area, and further examine the perimeter.

She also noted that there have been no radiation leaks recorded at the Chernobyl NPP since the strike.

“Of course, risks always remain. I always say that during any attacks on a nuclear facility, we must be aware that anything can happen. However, as of today, the situation is under control. I believe that in the near future, we will manage to fully complete the extinguishing work, and we can proceed with our further actions to restore the primary function of the arch,” Svitlana Hrynchuk said.
