The European Commission (EC) has not yet commented on the specific steps that will be taken to implement the statement by EC President Ursula von der Leyen regarding Brussels' countermeasures in response to the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on imported steel and aluminum.
"There was an order from President Trump. However, our American colleagues have not published the details of their measures. Therefore, there remains uncertainty. Today, we will not comment on this," said EC spokesman Olof Skoog during a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.
He was responding to a question about the timeline and manner in which the EU's countermeasures, promised by the President of the European Commission, will be implemented.
Von der Leyen released a statement earlier on Tuesday, calling the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum exports from Europe unjustified.
"Unjustified tariffs against the EU will not go unanswered - they will provoke strong and proportional countermeasures. The EU will act to protect its economic interests. We will defend our workers, businesses, and consumers," the statement from the EC President read.
As reported, the U.S. President signed an order imposing an additional 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum, on top of existing tariffs. "It is important for our country to have steel and aluminum produced on our territory. We are talking about tariffs of 25% - with no exceptions, regardless of which countries they come from," Trump stated.
