Zelensky welcomed Canada's G7 presidency, expressing hope for achieving a just peace.

President Vladimir Zelensky expressed hope that Canada's presidency of the G7 in 2025 will contribute to achieving a stable and just world.

The head of state wrote about this on the X platform.

Zelensky reminded that Canada has been supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence since the onset of the full-scale invasion.

“Over the past years of our collaboration, we have proven together that the unity of the largest democracies can make life more secure. We are counting on similar results in the new year,” the president noted.

Before the New Year, Zelensky spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He proposed to establish a joint working group with the G7 to intensify the search for Russia's “shadow fleet”.

The head of state also expressed gratitude to Canada for all the defense support provided, particularly for the NASAMS system, and informed about current military needs, primarily regarding air defense and armored vehicles.

Additionally, Zelensky suggested increasing funding for Ukrainian arms production and the possibility of localizing the production of certain types of weapons.

Since the beginning of 2022, Canada has allocated over 12.4 billion Canadian dollars in financial aid to Ukraine. Military assistance alone has reached 4.5 billion dollars.

More about Canada's G7 presidency

In 2025, Canada will take over the presidency of the “Group of Seven” from Italy. The G7 itself is an informal political forum that includes Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and the United States. Additionally, the European Union participates in the meetings but does not have voting rights for the annual gathering.

The 51st G7 summit will take place in July in the picturesque village of Kananaskis in Alberta. Kananaskis previously hosted the 28th G8 summit in 2002.

The 2025 summit will be the first for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. It will also mark the first summit for U.S. President Donald Trump in his new term.
