The driver, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar from Texas, deliberately drove his vehicle into the crowd, ignoring makeshift barriers. After the collision, he exited the vehicle and began shooting, to which the police responded with gunfire. The assailant was neutralized.
“This individual attempted to inflict maximum harm, acting with cold calculation,” stated police spokesperson Ann Kirkpatrick.
At the scene of the incident, officers discovered weapons, and in the suspect's vehicle, they found an ISIS flag and a potential explosive device. Additionally, two more explosive devices were located and defused in the immediate area.
The FBI classified the attack as a terrorist act, although it initially refrained from labeling it as such. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed condolences to the victims and emphasized:
“We are facing an act of terrorism that must not go unpunished.”
According to the investigation, Jabbar previously served in Afghanistan and may have connections to extremist groups. It is currently being determined whether he acted alone or in collaboration with others.
