In Damascus, the Ukrainian flag was raised over the honorary consulate.

Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga hoisted the Ukrainian flag over the honorary consulate of Ukraine in Damascus.

He announced this on his page on the X platform.

According to the minister, representatives of the Ukrainian community in Damascus were present at the ceremony alongside the honorary consul Tamer Altunsi. Sibiga expressed his gratitude to them for preserving the Ukrainian language and culture in Syria.

It is worth noting that in 2016, Ukraine closed its embassy in Syria in protest against the crimes of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Two years later, Syria also ceased the activities of its diplomatic mission in Kyiv.

In the summer of 2022, Ukraine and Syria completely severed diplomatic relations. This occurred after Syria recognized the Russia-occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as independent states.

During a meeting with the Syrian Foreign Minister of the interim government, Asaad Hasan al-Sheibani, Andriy Sibiga emphasized that Ukraine is ready to “turn a new page in bilateral relations” and restore diplomatic ties “based on mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

Sibiga's Visit to Syria

The head of Ukrainian diplomacy visited Syria on December 30. In Damascus, he held talks with the leadership of the Syrian administration — its leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, Prime Minister Mohamed al-Bashir, and Foreign Minister Asaad Hasan al-Sheibani.

Sibiga congratulated the Syrian people on the victory of the revolution, noting that this is a historic moment for Syria, offering hope for revival after many years of suffering.

The minister also announced that on December 31, Syria will receive 500 tons of Ukrainian flour as part of the humanitarian program "Grain from Ukraine." This will be enough to meet the needs of over 33,000 Syrian families or 167,000 individuals for a month.
