The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) raised the official exchange rate of the hryvnia against the US dollar by 10 kopecks on Friday, but reduced it by 7 kopecks at the end of trading on Monday to 41.7908 UAH/$1, according to data from the regulator's website.

"The Ukrainian currency market is experiencing stabilization of the hryvnia exchange rate following the traditional seasonal increase in demand for foreign currency in December," analysts from the currency exchange operator "KIT Group" noted in their second January currency market review.

The NBU set the reference rate at 12:00 on Monday at 41.7806 UAH/$1 compared to 41.7592 UAH/$1 on Friday.

In the cash market, the dollar rate today remained at 41.90 UAH/$1 for purchases but increased by 3 kopecks for sales to 41.93 UAH/$1.

"It is expected that the hryvnia to dollar exchange rate could enter the range of 41.5-42 UAH/$1 in the coming weeks," analysts from "KIT Group" forecast.

According to them, the main driver of exchange rate fluctuations remains the demand for foreign currency from businesses and the population.

The official hryvnia exchange rate is likely to decrease to 44 UAH/$1 during the first half of this year, analysts suggest.

As reported, the NBU reduced net interventions in the interbank market last week by 23.8%, or by $179.9 million, to $576.3 million.
