The U.S. Congress officially confirmed the victory of Republican Donald Trump in the presidential election held in November 2024 during a joint session of both chambers.
According to CNN, the vote counting process proceeded smoothly, without objections or incidents. The publication notes that this time the situation was significantly different from the events four years ago when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol during the certification of the 2020 election results.
The session was led by Vice President Kamala Harris in her role as President of the Senate. She announced the official results, acknowledging her team's defeat and Trump’s victory.
As a result of the voting, Trump, along with elected Vice President James DeVance, received 312 electoral votes, while Kamala Harris and her partner, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, secured 226 votes.
The next and final step towards Donald Trump's official inauguration as president will be the ceremony scheduled for January 20.
