The Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a limited armored counterattack against Russian troops in the Kursk region of Russia on January 5, 2025.

This was reported by the UK Ministry of Defence on X (Twitter).

According to the briefing, the attack occurred as Ukraine continued to defend its territorial bulge in Kursk against ongoing assaults from Russian and North Korean forces.

"Despite high casualties, Russia has achieved only minor successes in the territory held by Ukraine over the past weeks," the report states.

British intelligence indicates that in eastern Ukraine, Russia continued to focus its attacks in the central part of the Donetsk region. Specifically, "Russian troops have largely captured the city of Kurakhove." Russia began its offensive on the city in mid-November 2024. South of Pokrovsk, Russian forces advanced westward, capturing several villages and establishing positions 4 km south of the city.

"The center of the Donetsk region remains the most unstable area along the front line in eastern Ukraine," the UK Ministry of Defence notes.
