The RGW-90 Matador grenade launcher is equipped with the smart SMASH sight featuring "machine vision." Are there still benefits to such innovations?

The RGW-90 Matador has been actively supplied to Ukraine since 2022 and has demonstrated high effectiveness in combat. Now, it has also been equipped with a unique sight.

The German company Dynamit Nobel Defence, in collaboration with the Israeli firm SmartShooter, showcased the results of their joint efforts at the IDEX-2025 exhibition currently taking place in the UAE - the disposable grenade launcher RGW-90 Matador equipped with the SMASH sight.

As reported by Hartpunkt, the development has already been tested at a firing range, demonstrating maximum effectiveness and allowing for a "significant increase" in the likelihood of hitting moving targets at considerable distances.

From Defense Express's perspective, the essence of the SMASH sight lies in its combination of a laser rangefinder, ballistic calculator, and what is referred to as "machine vision" for target recognition and tracking. As soon as the crosshairs align with the calculated aiming point, the shot is fired.

Previously, SMASH was offered only as a sight for small arms. This was not only for the accurate elimination of enemy personnel but also as an answer to the question of how to combat drones.

The integration of this sight with the grenade launcher effectively reduces the dependence of its efficiency on the skill of the operator. Considering the images from IDEX-2025, this system resembles a full-fledged anti-tank missile complex.

At the same time, this combination and transformation of a lightweight grenade launcher into a light anti-tank guided missile system raises questions about its role on the modern battlefield. After all, the claimed firing range of the standard RGW-90 Matador is up to 600 meters, but the actual effective range against moving targets is significantly lower. However, even if the SMASH sight allows for effective targeting at the full 600 meters, it still weakly correlates with the fact that the primary anti-tank asset now is the FPV drone, which operates in NLOS (non-line-of-sight) mode over kilometers.
