The United States wants Ukraine to hold elections by the end of the year, especially in the event of a ceasefire on the front lines. This was reported by Reuters, citing Trump’s special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg.

In most democratic nations, elections occur during wartime. I believe it is important for them to do so. I think it is beneficial for democracy.

This is the essence of a strong democracy, where you have more than one person who could potentially run for office.

Kellogg and other White House officials have recently discussed the possibility of encouraging Ukraine to agree to elections as part of a potential ceasefire with Russia, according to two sources familiar with the negotiations and a former American official informed about the proposal.

Officially, the Trump administration has not approached Ukraine with a proposal to hold elections by the end of the year.

Zelensky won the presidential election in 2019, securing over 73% of the vote.

The next presidential elections in Ukraine were scheduled for March 31 of this year; however, they were not set due to the declaration of martial law, which has been extended every three months since February 2022. Zelensky's term formally ended on May 20.

Besides the presidential elections, parliamentary elections in Ukraine have also not taken place. They were supposed to occur last October but were canceled due to martial law.

According to media reports, the pro-presidential party "Servant of the People" plans to change its name before the elections.
