The G7 ambassadors have urged Ukraine's Prime Minister to expedite the establishment of the supervisory board of the SE "Energoatom," as stated by the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova.

"As G7 ambassadors, we sent a letter to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in December 2024, calling for the swift completion of contract signings and the initiation of the new supervisory board's operations. Having a fully functioning board will be crucial for discussing significant new investments," Mathernova noted in response to a written inquiry from Interfax-Ukraine.

She pointed out that Ukraine voluntarily agreed to align the supervisory board of "Energoatom" with OECD recommendations, but since the election of the new board in June 2024, contracts with independent members have yet to be signed, and the board is not operational.

According to her, having fully functioning supervisory boards, mostly composed of independent members, in state companies is an essential element for proper planning and implementation of large infrastructure projects.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers approved Timothy John Stone, Michael E. Kirst, and Jarek Neverowicz as independent members of the "Energoatom" supervisory board by decree No. 566 on June 21, 2024, with state representatives being Tymofiy Milovanov and Vitaliy Petruk.

Since then, the supervisory board has not fully commenced its operations. Sources from Interfax-Ukraine indicated that the independent members are dissatisfied with the proposed remuneration.

The Cabinet approved the terms of contracts with members of the supervisory board of NAEC by decree No. 1224 on November 26, 2024, without disclosing details.

In December, First Deputy Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev reported that the government is awaiting positions from the independent board members, whose first meeting has been pending since July 17. According to him, the proposed terms are in line with existing salaries in other major energy companies in Ukraine.

In early January 2025, Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak (Holos faction) suggested involving international partners in discussions regarding the disruption of the functioning of the NAEC "Energoatom" supervisory board.
