Zelensky on mobilization: We need to focus on improving quality.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has commented on the country's mobilization process. The head of state believes that it is essential to focus on improving its quality.
Зеленский о мобилизации: необходимо сосредоточиться на улучшении качества.

He stated this in an interview with Italian journalist Cecilia Sale for the newspaper Il Foglio.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine is mobilizing a considerable number of recruits aged 25 and older, and the military has rotations and leaves. However, the president noted that "this is not enough" and emphasized the need to improve quality.

The president also pointed out that there is a demand in society for the demobilization of soldiers, but as of now, this is not provided for by law.

"If tomorrow half of the army just goes home, then we should have surrendered on the first day. If tomorrow half of the army just goes home, then the enemy will simply kill us all. Absolutely everyone,” the president said.

What about demobilization?

Last year, the government presented a draft law to update mobilization legislation. However, provisions regarding demobilization and military rotation were removed before the second reading. Media reported that such changes to the draft were initiated by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky.

The Ministry of Defense stated that there is a directive from the parliamentary committee to develop a new, separate law regarding rotation and demobilization within 8 months. The work on it was supposed to be completed by December 18, 2024. However, this date has been extended.

The Ministry of Defense explained that currently, the Ukrainian army does not have enough reserves to replace those who are demobilized.

Subsequently, it became known that the Ministry of Defense appealed to the committee of the Verkhovna Rada requesting an extension of the preparation deadline for the draft law until March 2025.
