Recall that on February 12, U.S. President Donald Trump first spoke on the phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and afterward with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump noted that he and Putin agreed that they want to "stop millions of deaths." According to the press secretary of the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov, Putin informed Trump about the need to address the "root causes of the conflict" and invited the U.S. President to Moscow.
At the same time, Zelensky mentioned that he and Trump discussed the possibility of achieving peace, their readiness to collaborate at a team level, and technological capabilities, including drones and other modern manufacturing. He expressed gratitude to Trump for his "interest in what we can accomplish together."
Now, according to Trump, it is expected that he will visit Moscow, while Putin will travel to Washington, but prior to that, they will meet in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, the EU, and Ukraine issued a joint statement. In it, the diplomats emphasized that Ukraine and Europe must be involved in any negotiations regarding the war.
In the Kremlin, however, they stated that they envision two separate dialogues as part of the peace negotiations—one bilateral with the U.S. and one involving Ukraine. At the same time, they believe it is "too early" to discuss the participation of the European Union or China.
