According to Rutte, Russian leader Vladimir Putin aims to "wipe Ukraine off the map," and what is happening in Ukraine could also occur in a NATO country.
This is why he urged Alliance members to increase their defense spending, which could likely exceed "much more than 2%" of GDP, as previously agreed upon.
Rutte mentioned that next year Russia is expected to spend between 7 to 8% of its GDP on defense, which is significantly higher than any NATO country. Therefore, he believes it is "time to adopt a wartime mentality," as "the danger is approaching us at full speed."
Additionally, the NATO Secretary General warned against a poor agreement with Russia, stating that in such a case, "Putin will emerge victorious, and this will have global repercussions." He also believes that Ukraine should be included in any peace negotiations.
He provided data on the casualties in the war, indicating that both sides are experiencing over 10,000 killed and wounded each week. Meanwhile, the total number of dead and injured is reportedly over one million people.
It is worth noting that earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported on the total losses of one million people from both sides. Their unofficial estimates, based on data from Western intelligence, also suggested that the number of Ukrainian military casualties has allegedly reached nearly half a million.
Official figures from the Ukrainian side, recently provided by President Volodymyr Zelensky, claim that in the war against Russia, 43,000 military personnel have died, with another 370,000 injured.
