This was reported by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on the social network X.
“The construction of the 'Eastern Shield' has begun. Initial work is underway near the border with Russia,” Tusk wrote.
The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
Poland has announced the allocation of 10 billion zlotys (approximately 2.3 billion euros) for the strengthening of its northern and eastern borders as part of the 'Eastern Shield' security program. This initiative involves fortifying 400 km of the border with Russia and Belarus, covering various aspects such as electronic and technical barriers, as well as specialized engineering structures.
The construction of defensive fortifications has involved the Baltic states, along with British and American troops.
Earlier, Poland began building fortifications near its eastern border, particularly with Belarus. This is linked to the need to defend against the pressure exerted by the “Lukashenko regime.”
In June 2023, Poland completed the electronic barrier at the border with Belarus. It is equipped with thousands of cameras and other technology designed to prevent illegal border crossings.
Subsequently, there were reports of plans to construct 70-meter observation towers along the border with Belarus, which will be used to monitor an area of nearly 10 kilometers on both sides.
