Orban initiated discussions on peace in Ukraine for Hungary.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes that it is due to his country's presidency in the EU Council that Europe has started to contemplate a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

He wrote about this on social media platform X.

In his opinion, six months ago "no one wanted to hear" about peace in Europe, but now "everyone is talking about it."

"We opened the door, and now we can start substantive negotiations. This is the greatest achievement of Hungary's presidency in the EU," Orbán believes.

It should be noted that Hungary's presidency in the EU Council began in June. At that time, Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs János Bóka presented the priorities of the presidency for his country — peace was not mentioned in any of the points.

Additionally, the slogan chosen for the presidency was "Let's make Europe great again" — which resembles the campaign slogan of the elected U.S. President Donald Trump and his favorite phrase.

After Hungary, Poland will take over the presidency of the EU Council: it will hold the position from January to June 2025.
