This was reported by the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.
“This will continue to deprive Moscow of revenue for financing the war. Russia must pay for the damage it causes,” she wrote.
Hungary opposed the extension of these sanctions. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Brussels must adapt to the “new situation” and lift sanctions against Russia. He also mentioned that if Ukraine truly wants the extension of European sanctions, it must resume gas transit.
Furthermore, the Hungarian Prime Minister believes that anti-Russian restrictions did not stop the war and did not hinder the Russian economy.
However, in the end, Budapest agreed not to block the extension of sanctions, but the EU must issue a statement acknowledging Hungary's concerns regarding “energy security” in light of the halt in Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
