This is mentioned in a letter from congressmen that was obtained by the Hill publication.
Republican Joe Wilson and Democrat Steve Cohen from the House of Representatives sent a letter to Biden requesting that he grant Poland the authority to “intercept and neutralize missiles over Ukraine, especially those that could enter Polish airspace.”
The politicians reminded that due to Russian air attacks in November 2022, two Polish farmers lost their lives.
The congressmen emphasized that Russia continues to escalate through hybrid warfare, specifically violating airspace, attacking critical infrastructure, and attempting to destabilize democratic institutions.
“We hesitated to confront these threats decisively, allowing Russia to wage war against the Alliance with minimal consequences. In this context, Poland's request to intercept and neutralize missiles over Ukraine is both necessary and urgent as a mechanism to support Ukraine and protect the front line of NATO borders,” wrote Wilson and Cohen.
Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated that Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine must intercept Russian drones and missiles even before they enter their airspace.
It is worth noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine's partners could shoot down Russian drones and missiles as seen with assistance in the Middle East, although they are not yet ready for such a decision.
This is not the first time the head of the Ukrainian state has called on NATO allies to defend Ukraine similarly to Israel. In April, he even criticized that “Israel was not left alone” when attacked by Iran, adding that the Alliance must make a choice, “whether life is truly valued equally everywhere.”
However, Pentagon officials explained that Israel and Ukraine represent “very different battlefields”— and intercepting Russian missiles from Poland or Romania would involve the U.S. in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
