The commander of the Southern Military District is stepping down to coordinate military aid to Ukraine from Germany.

The commander of the Operational Command "South," Brigadier General Gennady Shapovalov, is stepping down from his position. He will be coordinating military assistance to Ukraine from Germany.

Shapovalov announced his resignation on the page of the Operational Command "South".

He stated that he is proud to have been part of “this strong, cohesive, and motivated team of professional managers, true warriors, and genuine patriots”.

Shapovalov also expressed his gratitude to all his subordinates for their diligent service and fruitful collaboration.

“I am convinced that you will continue to strive for excellence, fulfilling your military duty with honor, and enhancing the glory of the Ukrainian army in pursuit of our Victory”, the military leader added.

Recall that in January, President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Hennadiy Shapovalov as the coordinator for military assistance to Ukraine in Wiesbaden, Germany. This location hosts the NATO command center for providing assistance and training to Ukraine, which was inaugurated in July 2024.

He hails from the Kirovohrad region. He studied at the Tank Troops Institute, the National Defense University of Ukraine, and the Ostroh Academy.

From 2019 to 2021, Shapovalov served as the commander of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Yakov Handziuk, and in April 2024, he was appointed commander of the Operational Command "South".
