The National Police reported this.
The young man faces life imprisonment under the charges brought against him. Investigators have already submitted the indictment to the court.
It is recalled that, according to the investigation, Vyacheslav Zinchenko ambushed linguist Irina Faryon on the evening of July 19 in the courtyard of her home on Masaryka Street in Lviv. He reportedly approached the woman and shot her in the head before fleeing. A few hours later, the public figure died in the hospital.
The police established that the young man became a member of an internet group in 2022 that promotes a culture of violence and cruelty, as well as racial, national, and religious intolerance and discrimination. Furthermore, in 2024, he joined another group associated with a Russian neo-Nazi organization.
Earlier, the Russian Telegram channel Astra circulated a video allegedly filmed by the Russian National Socialist group NS/WP, claiming responsibility for Faryon's murder.
According to the investigation, Zinchenko developed a personal animosity towards Irina Faryon due to her active stance on defending the Ukrainian language and culture.
"In the opinion of the perpetrator, her actions were fracturing national unity — this is why he intended to murder the public figure,” the police stated.
It is noted that earlier, Deputy Head of the National Police Andrey Nebytov stated after personally speaking with Zinchenko that he was “absolutely pro-Ukrainian.” However, according to him, the young man “believes that there is no need to divide Ukrainian society.”
The father of the young man told journalists that he serves at the front and has not seen his son for a long time, but in his opinion, Vyacheslav had no motives for killing Faryon, as he held no xenophobic views and is a patriot.
Zinchenko's mother mentioned that he admired the figure of the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Stepan Bandera. She considers the trial against her son to be “some kind of political game.”
Two groups with opposing views on Zinchenko attend the court hearings. In particular, a group of women wearing T-shirts with the young man's photo came to the court and chanted: “Freedom for Vyacheslav Zinchenko!” The others shouted back at them: “Shame!”
