Merkel stated that without the support of the US and NATO, Ukraine will struggle to maintain its independence.

According to the former official, in the current circumstances, the transatlantic partnership is more essential than ever. Merkel emphasized: “Only with the USA and within NATO can we ensure that Putin does not win the war and that Ukraine remains an independent state.”

At the same time, she stated that the newly elected US leader, Donald Trump, is a “unique president” who defends the legitimate interests of the United States.

“We will not change Donald Trump, but we can respond to him. Europe must unite its interests. The US would be foolish not to seek an ally in Europe. We are also a strong factor,” Merkel added.
